It's Official - Practice Act Revisions Signed Into Law

October 20th

Today marks a truly historic moment for athletic trainers in New Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy has signed into law the first modernization of our Athletic Training Practice Act since 2007/08 — a milestone years in the making.

This achievement reflects the persistence, expertise, and unity of our community. From outreach and testimony to relationship-building and showing up at critical moments, you made this happen. Special thanks go to the ATSNJ Governmental Affairs Committee for their steady leadership and to Eric Orlando (The Zita Group) for his unwavering advocacy in Trenton.

What This Law Means:

- A modernized practice act that reflects today’s realities of the profession.

- Recognition of the master’s degree as the new educational standard for entry into the field.

- Clearer definition of our patient population — adopting the term “physically active individual” so more New Jersey residents can access the skilled care athletic trainers provide.

To reflect on this win, its impact, and the road ahead, watch our video interview with Christina Emrich, Immediate Past Chair of ATSNJ’s Governmental Affairs Committee and current D2 Director.

Help us amplify this moment — share the video, tell your networks, and let’s celebrate what this means for our profession and for the patients and communities we serve.
