Public Secondary School Employment Requirements

Department of Education (DOE) Certificate

If you are planning to work in the Public Secondary School setting, you must obtain a certificate from the Department of Education.

Department of Education Certificate Act (6A:9B-14.17) 

School athletic trainer 

(a) The athletic trainer endorsement authorizes the holder to serve as a school athletic trainer in preschool through grade 12.

(b) To be eligible for the school athletic trainer endorsement, a candidate shall: 
1. Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; and 
2. Satisfactorily complete the requirements established by the State Board of Medical Examiners for licensure as an athletic trainer, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:35-10.

(c)   An emergency certificate is not available for the school athletic trainer endorsement. 

Instructions on Applying for the DOE Athletic Trainer Certificate: 
If you plan on working in a secondary school setting, you will need to obtain a DOE Standard Certificate for School Athletic Trainer. You would fall under the category Education Services Personnel with the designation of School Athletic Trainer (2930). To get the DOE certificate, you will need apply online and send a copy of your official transcripts (electronic transcripts preferred and can be sent to certapplication@doe.nj.gov) along with a copy of your NJ AT license to the same email address.
