2025 ATSNJ Award and Scholarship Winners

25 Award Winners

Every spring ATSNJ honors working professionals and students that have made significant impacts on the athletic training profession. These individuals have gone above and beyond to help advance athletic trainers’ impact on the State of New Jersey and improve the access to healthcare for physically active individuals. This year includes three awards, one hall of fame nomination, and two scholarships. Congratulations to all those honored! 

 

Dr. Timothy Hosea Team Physician Award

The 2025 Dr. Timothy Hosea Team Physician Award winner is Harry Bade III, MD.  A 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Bade obtained his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College.  An advocate for athletic trainers in the State of New Jersey, Dr. Bade has served as the Team Physician for numerous, professional, collegiate, and secondary school settings.  Dr. Bade was the 2004 recipient of the ATSNJ Presidential Award.  He has been recognized numerous times as a “Top Doc” within the New Jersey/New York Metro area.  Dr. Bade is also a veteran of the United States Army Reserve.

 

Jack Weakley Scholarship

The 2025 Jack Weakly D2 Scholarship winner is Kyle Grehan of William Paterson University.  The award, named in honor of the legendary leader and contributor to the athletic training community, is awarded to a deserving student enrolled in one of New Jersey’s CAATE programs.  Kyle, a Jersey City, New Jersey resident, is a member of his Athletic Training Club and was a member of the William Paterson Men’s Soccer Team earning Academic All-NJAC Honorable Mention.  Kyle has also volunteered with the Special Olympics.

 

Richard Malacrea Scholarship

The 2025 Richard Malacrea Scholarship winner is Rowan University’s Maya Jones. This award, named in honor of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Famer and founding member of the Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey, Inc., is presented to an athletic training student demonstrating superior academic achievement and involvement. Maya resides in Cranford, New Jersey, and serves on the D2 NATA Foundation Student Committee and is Rowan University’s to the D2 Student Ambassador Committee.

 

Presidential Award

The 2025 Presidential Award Winner is Greg Tufaro. During 31 years as a national award-winning journalist for USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey, Greg wrote extensively about student-athlete health and safety. The issue remains at the forefront in his new role as Senator Patrick Diegnan’s chief of staff. In honor of their daughter, Greg and his wife Cyndi established The Marisa Tufaro Foundation, which has donated $375,000 to assist pediatric patients. Marisa survived six open-heart surgeries and a heart transplant before succumbing to cancer in 2017. She was 13. Greg graduated from Rutgers University and Saint Joseph High School (Metuchen), where he is an Athletics Hall of Fame inductee.

 

Media Award

Elaine Quijano and CBS News Medical Producer Sandra Temko are receiving the 2025 ATSNJ Media Award for their comprehensive report related to heat related illness prevention during athletic participation.

Elaine Quijano is a weekend mornings anchor for CBS New York and a correspondent for CBS News and Stations, contributing to all CBS News, Stations and Streaming.

In her role at CBS New York, Quijano co-anchors the weekend morning show. Her reporting as a CBS News correspondent is featured across all of CBS News and Stations' broadcasts and platforms, with a focus on Health & Wellness.

Quijano joined CBS News in 2010. Based in New York, she has covered a variety of stories, including the Boston Marathon bombings, Superstorm Sandy, and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Quijano was also part of the CBS News team that received an Alfred I. duPont Award for the Network's coverage of the 2012 Newtown shootings. 

Prior to joining CBS News, she worked for CNN as a Washington, D.C.-based correspondent. While there, she reported from various beats, including the White House, the Pentagon and the Supreme Court.

Quijano holds a degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

 

Hall of Fame

Kevin Briles ATC, CSCS, EMT-B is the 2025 Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey Hall of Fame Inductee. Kevin obtained his bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College in 1997.  A long-time leader in New Jersey’s athletic training community, he has been the athletic trainer at Delsea Regional High School (Gloucester County) since 2004.  Kevin has served the ATSNJ as the Southern Regional Representative, President-Elect, President, and Past President.  He has been a member of both the Student and Conference Committees.  He currently serves on the Governmental Relations Committee, Honors/Awards Committee, and the Secondary Schools Committee.  Kevin received the ATSNJ Distinguished Service Award in 2022.
