In this video, Dr. Bradford Tucker discusses a study that he and his colleagues published in the September 2016 Issue of Orthopedics. The study evaluated the ability of Athletic Trainers to appropriately diagnose acute injuries and compared them with the formal diagnosis of a licensed physician. Athletic Trainers were in concurrence with physicians 92% (263/286) of the time. In 23 cases, Athletic Trainers were not in concurrence with physicians and the majority of those cases involved non-displaced fractures which required use of X-ray in order to make the final diagnosis. X-ray is generally not available for acute, on-site injury diagnosis. Athletic Trainers were determined to be highly proficient and in concurrence with physician diagnosis.
