Update on NJSIAA Wrestling Skin Checks

UPDATE 12/17/2015, 12:30pm - Response from the NJSIAA regarding the new Wrestling Skin Check Procedures.

"At this time, with the season now upon us, we will hold of for now on having Athletic Trainers perform skin checks at weigh in prior to a wrestling match. For this season, skin checks according to the rule previously stated will be performed by the referee assigned to the match."

The Executive Council had been working diligently with NJSIAA and the SMAC for this positive resolution.

Thank you for your concerns and your patience.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As many of you are aware, the NJSIAA and the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) published guidelines with regard to skin checks for high school wrestlers. The ATSNJ leadership was pleased to be included in discussions around the guidelines as it is our strong desire to represent our members in any area that impacts their practice. While the ATSNJ is neither the authority charged with promoting such guidelines nor do we have the ability to change them on our own, we do believe our role is the advancement of the profession and promotion of the highest level of care for our athletes, and as such we believe that the new skin check guidelines are appropriate in concept. However, we also believe that the current form in which they have been presented may lead to unintended consequences for our members, the athletes for whom they care, and other stakeholders. We have shared our concerns in dialogue with the NJSIAA and in a letter that you can find at the bottom of this article.

We realize that many of you are concerned as the wrestling season is upon us. The ATSNJ has recommended that these guidelines be tabled until the 2016-2017 wrestling season. We hope to have a formal answer on these guidelines from the NJSIAA tomorrow as to whether they will be tabled for this season.

Thank you for your continued support of the ATSNJ, and for allowing us to represent our profession on your behalf.

Sincerely,

Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey Executive Council
